The Miami 21 Zoning Ordinance is a up-to-date way for the city to manage and provide guidance as it continues to grow. It focuses and values the importance of safe and livable spaces for the residents, preserving the natural beauty of the city, and also supporting the economy of the city while providing access to opportunity to its people. The two main ideas that it constructs itself around are New Urbanism and Smart Growth. In essence, Miami 21 is the blueprint for future developments of the city. [1]
Miami needed to take action in monitoring the rapid growth of the city, so its planning department commissioned Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co., a planning firm, to modernize the city’s zoning code to guide its development for the 21st century. DPZ’s goal with the Miami 21 project was to create a code that would be easily readable and all-encompassing in the urban development of the city. Figure 1 shows the zoning of many different types of parcels throughout the city. The first official meeting for the making of the plan was on April 16, 2005. The City of Miami approved of Miami 21 on October 22, 2009 and after a decade of writing, editing, and presenting updated plans to the planning commission and to the public, the City Commission adopted the final code in May 2015.
